Amazon Changed Its E-Book Return Policy?

Latest Amazon News

Amazon changed its controversial ebook return policy.

A Win For Authors With E-Book Editions

According to the recent announcement from The Authors Guild, Amazon will prevent the return of a Kindle ebook for a full refund if the buyer read more than 10 percent of the book.

Excerpt from The Author Guild’s latest announcement:

The Authors Guild is proud to report that our discussions with Amazon’s senior executive team concerning the platform’s policy that allows readers to return ebooks online within seven days of purchase, regardless of the amount read, have resulted in a major breakthrough. Yesterday, Amazon informed us of its plans to change its ebook return policy to restrict automatic returns to purchases where no more than 10 percent of the book has been read.”

If a customer wants to return a book after they’ve read more than 10 percent of the book, they’ll need to fill out a customer service request.

The aim of this practice is to ensure that the return request is genuine and complies with Amazon’s policies against abuse. Basically, making sure it isn’t a troll.

As “review bombing” became more commonplace over the last few years, returning of mostly affordable e-books (often $0.99) became commonplace for internet trolls and hate groups.

Why?

Because the returns financially impact the author.

“When an Amazon customer returns an e-book, royalties originally paid to the author at the time of purchase are deducted from their earnings balance. Authors can end up with negative balances when customers return books after the author has already been paid by Kindle Direct Publishing” – NPR

And, well, there are the “good intention” folks with their “life hacks.”

These “life hacks” quickly spread like wildfire on social media teaching readers to abuse the Amazon return policy and read for free.

Reah Foxx, a book lover from Louisiana, started a petition to change the policy.

As of September 22nd, 2022, the policy has since been changed. However, the change does not go into effect until “by the end of the year.”

Personally, I think this is the right step forward for Amazon, but there’s still more work to be done toward other damaging policies.

What do you think about Amazon changing its policy on returning e-books?

#BannedBooksWeek 2022

“This is a dangerous time for readers and the public servants who provide access to reading materials. Readers, particularly students, are losing access to critical information, and librarians and teachers are under attack for doing their jobs.”

Hmm. What should you know about me? I wonder. AHA!! I got it! I…(a few hours later)… am the author of the picture book Over The Creek (2019). I like blogging. I’m a professional procrastinator (oh, come on – all of us are). Oh, and I am a proud father of a really cool daughter. Weekly Roundup – February 18th, 2020

Welcome to the fourth edition (two weeks late, family emergencies and the like) of “weekly roundup”; a new weekly blog post discussing the latest updates from my own writing adventures, the world of literature, Twitter, and more.

As the weekly roundup segment grows, so too will the type of discussions had here.

Before we start, go ahead and register for my bi-weekly newsletter to get all the latest and greatest updates.

Self-Publishing Journey with Amazon

Quick Note: Over The Creek is on Amazon. Woohoo!

Self-publishing with Amazon has been….an interesting journey, to say the least. First, the excitement following the official publication on Amazon. Second, a few friends and family purchase and receive the book. Third, checking the reports section of the Kindle Direct Publishing dashboard.

Still checking.

More checking.

Where are the accurate numbers?

Waiting GIF

Long story short: there is no clear answer from anyone at Amazon why the reports are not showing accurate and updated data/earnings from books sold.

Needless to say, this has become infuriating because many other authors are experiencing the same issue.

I wasn’t expecting my first ever children’s book to sell hundreds or even thousands of copies. Hell, wasn’t even expecting more than a couple dozen in the first few months. I’m grateful for the amount of sales I’ve received so far – it’s truly validating. Not to mention Over The Creek is currently a 5-star reviewed book.

Do I find somewhere else to self-publish? There are alternatives to Amazon like Ingram Spark and other services. However, Amazon is currently the most “notable” retailer and option.

The downside?

If I’m selling a color-printed book at roughly $15 a copy, that’s only $5 in royalty earnings.

Talk about a steep cut.

Take the good with the bad, right?

Finding My Way Into Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble is a giant bookstore franchise with stores all over the United States and beyond. Being published is just one part of my dream as a writer – books being sold at Barnes & Noble is the other part of that dream.

Happy to report that a Barnes & Noble store here in Surprise, Arizona happily agreed to order a few “test run” copies.

Over The Creek will officially be sold in a B&N store later this week.

Dance Gru

That very same day, I announced the wonderful news on several Surprise Facebook groups.

The response was more overwhelming than anticipated. News of the book release garnered 200+ “Likes.” What’s more is several dozen people have stated they want to purchase a copy for either themselves or for their family members when it arrives. Furthermore, I will be setting up an “Author/Signing” event at the same store.

This has given my writing a new life, if I’m honest. The response has made me feel validated as a writer.

Look out for more on Twitter news of the author/signing event and more.

Find Me On Twitter

Come find me on twitter!

On Twitter, not only do I work to promote my book, but share other writers’ works as well. Using the hashtag “#WritingCommunity”, I like to connect with other writers, asking various questions, keeping things lively and engaging. Just last week alone, I earned 800+ followers.

If you want me to showcase your work on this blog, subscribe to my newsletter above or leave a comment below.

That’s it for Weekly Roundup #4.

Finally Published on Amazon

Fiiinnnaaalllyyy published a picture book, Over The Creek, on Amazon!

This book has been about a year in the making. Needless to say, I’m super relieved the publishing journey is finally over. For some time, I considered the traditional publishing route: find an agent, get published through a publishing house, etc. And for a short time I pursued said route, but the lack of patience I held became too much.

When I heard about Kindle Direct Publishing on Amazon, formerly CreateSpace, I quickly jumped at the opportunity. Formatting the book, I felt, took more time figuring out than writing and marketing the book.

Self Publishing on Amazon

Over The Creek is written by Jacob Thomas and illustrated by Sarah Arrowsmith. This book is about three siblings challenging each other to a simple game where they later learn there is always more than one way in overcoming an obstacle and to never underestimate one’s abilities.
