Flash Fiction WIP

I wanted to do this flash fiction piece for #FlashFictionFriday but decided halfway through I would turn it into something…a little more.

We Got Zombies

Wow. A survivor at 14. Surviving was easy. But it wasn’t as easy fighting off a horde of slow-walking and outright silly zombies for two years. That’s right. Zombies! In this economy?! Believe it or not, that hasn’t been my greatest achievement so far. Two years ago, I built a really cool zombie defense system for the everyday person. How cool is that? Oh, it has all the latest gadgets, lights, and spike tech*, and it even comes in cherry red with bright orange and yellow flames on the sides. It worked out well. There’s just one teeny-tiny problem. My zombie defense system worked…a little too well?

*spike tech is filled with the coolest spikes that can ever go on a home zombie defense system. It’s got retractable spikes, spikes that go zap, and spikes that fire out like darts!

No one believed me when I said the zombie pandemic was coming. That’s right. A pandemic, not an apocalypse. Most people in town prepared for the worst before the zombies arrived here. Some were not so lucky.

Hi! I’m Andi. And this is my story of how I survived and ended the zombie pandemic in my town.

Like I said, no one believed me when I said the zombie pandemic was coming – not an apocalypse. That’s all Hollywood’s kind of action. You’re probably asking, “Hey, Andi? How did you know the zombies were coming when you were just a twelve-year-old kid?”

I’m smart as heck!

I’m what the local therapist calls a “prodigy.” I hate that word. My interests made me how smart I am today. My mom once said I took home every single book I could hold from the library since I was just two years old. Have you ever heard of Matilda? No, not the book by Roald Dahl. I’m talking about the 1996 movie with Mara Wilson and the mean Ms. Trunchbull. Yeah, I’m like her but without the really cool superpowers. Anyways, I started noticing some clues in the months leading up to the zombie’s arrival when I first met my engineering college professor. She reminded me of Miss Honey.

“Miss Honey” loved zombies, too. The ones on television and in movies, that is. She said her favorite was Shaun of the Dead. SUPER COOL because that’s my favorite, too. This is a flash fiction piece after all, so I’m going to move on now.

Fourth wall break. Nice.

“Obviously, you’re not going to walk into the forest nearby where there’s a super secret military base known for its creepy happenings from time to time,” she said. “There are whispers you could hear low growls the closer you get to the outside gate.”

N-no, I’m not shaking right now I thought to myself. “What’s life without a few adrenaline rushes, huh?” Not the brightest thing I’ve said. Out loud, at least.

Each day after school we would do our best in getting closer to the gates without being noticed. Don’t ask me how many times we almost got caught.

Then one day, everything…just…stopped. An unusual parcel arrived at my house one day. I wasn’t expecting any deliveries. Inside it was a USB drive. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have plugged it in.

Guess what?

Cliffhanger.

#BannedBooksWeek 2022

“This is a dangerous time for readers and the public servants who provide access to reading materials. Readers, particularly students, are losing access to critical information, and librarians and teachers are under attack for doing their jobs.”

Hmm. What should you know about me? I wonder. AHA!! I got it! I…(a few hours later)… am the author of the picture book Over The Creek (2019). I like blogging. I’m a professional procrastinator (oh, come on – all of us are). Oh, and I am a proud father of a really cool daughter. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here writing weird posts and posts about books and writing related stuff.

Writing advice? Um. Let’s see…my advice would be … poof!! … cliffhanger!!
